Ye’s tweets became a fan-made Yeezy Gap catalogue. The Round Jacket wasn’t in it

The first look at Yeezy Gap lasted five seconds. Ye posted it on 16 Jul 2020, US time, captioned “YZY GAP fitting”. There’s a model being fitted for loose, shiny trousers in a Wyoming warehouse, bright clothes spread across the floor, and a Ripsaw EV2 tank pulling out behind them. Hypebae picked out tie-dye in yellow, orange, pink and purple, plus a deep khaki.

Gap and Ye had announced the deal on 26 Jun 2020, and nothing would go on sale for almost a year. For most people, Yeezy Gap was whatever Ye put on Twitter, and fans filled in the rest themselves. Complex couldn’t resist the callback: 16 years after “Spaceship”, the song about his old job at Gap, Ye was designing for it.

The fitting clip wasn’t a one-off. Highsnobiety counts a run of mood-board posts after it, fabric choices included.

15 Aug 2020: “YZY GAP KIDS”

The next batch came all in one night. On 15 Aug 2020 Ye posted dozens of images in what he called “another twitter tirade before bedtime”. Hypebeast read the Yeezy Gap ones as bright colours, camouflage and baseball uniforms.

Two were captioned “YZY GAP KIDS”: a wall of pinned photos of kids’ clothes, heavy on camo, denim overalls and mesh jerseys. Another was a digital drawing captioned “WATERPROOF YZY GAP BAG MOCK UP”: a tan bag with an orange-padded strap and a grab handle set into the front. It’s a mock-up, not a sample, and Ye was the one who said so.

October: a catalogue Gap didn’t make

Then the fans had a go. On 22 Oct 2020 @_alchimist posted an unofficial Yeezy Gap catalogue, and Hypebeast ran it two days later. It named a flight jacket, a “Supply” hoodie, natural denim jeans and a “Transporter” bag, all things that’d turned up on Ye’s Twitter. The only shoes were a roper boot and the Foam Runner.

Hypebeast was careful with it. The prices and descriptions were copy-pasted, it pointed out, and it wasn’t a final line-up.

It wasn’t. When Yeezy Gap finally sold something, on 8 Jun 2021, it was a blue Round Jacket, and the catalogue hadn’t guessed it.
