Ye ran for president in 2020, and his campaign hoodie had no slogan

In September 2020 he posted a folded grey-purple hoodie with a Kanye 2020 Vision tag on the hood and nothing else on it. The campaign site went live with prices that October.

Ye posted the photo of the folded hoodie shortly before Newsweek’s report of 25 Sep 2020. He’d first shown 2020 VISION merch (a shirt and a cap) on 12 Aug 2020 (NME), and linked the campaign site with prices during the vice-presidential debate on 7 Oct 2020 (Complex, 8 Oct 2020).

“2020 hoodie,” Ye wrote in September 2020, under a photo of a folded hoodie and the eyes emoji. Newsweek described it as grey-purple, and said the only sign it was his was a tag on the hood reading “Kanye 2020 Vision”. The tag said where it was made, too: the United States. There wasn’t a link, and there wasn’t a price.

Most campaign merch shouts a slogan. This one didn’t have one. Out of the house it reads as a lavender hoodie and nothing more. You’d have to stand close enough to read the hood to know whose campaign it was.

August: a shirt, a cap and Diet Prada

The merch had been a Twitter story for weeks. On 12 Aug 2020 Ye posted the first 2020 VISION pieces, a shirt and a cap, and called out Diet Prada, the fashion watchdog account, while he was at it. NME ran the preview the same day. Highsnobiety’s headline the next day called it his worst merch ever. None of it was on sale yet, and Newsweek ran its hoodie story under “Right Now, You Can’t”.

Prices, during the debate

Twelve days after Newsweek’s headline, you could. That’s when Ye, during the vice-presidential debate on 7 Oct 2020, posted merch teases, including a black VOTE KANYE hoodie, and linked the campaign site. Prices ran from $40 for a VOTE hat to $200 for a hoodie and a 2020 Vision hat, Complex reported.

No front print, no back print

Paris Saint’s photos of a lavender one show a heavy, boxy pullover in a washed shade, with a pouch pocket and ribbed cuffs and hem. There’s nothing on the front and nothing on the back. The neck label reads 2020 VISION and MADE IN USA, and the only branding you’d spot from across a room is the small tag on the hood.

Ye’s caption was two words and an emoji. The hoodie said even less.
