Ye rebuilt his childhood home inside Soldier Field, then walked out of it on fire

Ye built his mother’s house in the middle of Soldier Field. It was a to-scale replica of his South Shore childhood home, sitting on a mound of dirt with a lit cross on the roof. Donda West had bought the real one almost 40 years earlier. Complex reported that Ye’d bought it back in April 2020.

That was Chicago on 26 Aug 2021, the third Donda listening event and the first outside Atlanta. The album still wasn’t out. Three events in, the listening parties had become the rollout. He’d switched his name to Ye on Instagram beforehand, and Demna, Balenciaga’s creative director, was art-directing again.

All black, no face

Ye came out onto the porch masked and in all black, with North and Saint beside him, and the Sun-Times said the mask stayed on for most of the night. Up close it’s a different story. David X Prutting’s backstage photo for Vogue shows a black leather jacket with Balenciaga’s B logo on the chest and leather biker trousers with Balenciaga knee pads. There’s a cap with flames on the brim, too. Out on the field, dancers in bulletproof DONDA vests circled the house.

The guest list made its own headlines. DaBaby, after the backlash over his homophobic comments at Rolling Loud, took JAY-Z’s old verse on “Jail”. Marilyn Manson, who’d been accused of abuse by several women, stood on the porch.

Out the front door, on fire

Near the end the house filled with smoke. Ye walked out the front door on fire, in a fire-resistant suit. A stagehand put him out with an extinguisher that’d sat by the house all night. Complex reported he’d wanted to burn the whole house down and the city wouldn’t allow it.

Then a veiled woman in white came down the aisle. It was Kim Kardashian, in the closing look from Demna’s first couture show for Balenciaga, which Vogue noted was the house’s first couture collection since 1968. Ye hadn’t taken the mask off all night until then.

Three days later, the merch

Donda came out on 29 Aug 2021, and so did the merch. Hypebeast reported it was billed as “Engineered by Balenciaga”, and there wasn’t much of it: two layered long sleeves, a black hat and a black mask with zippered eyeholes. One long sleeve carried the Soldier Field house on one side and Donda as a baby on the other.

The city wouldn’t let him burn the house down. Three days later, anyone could order the mask.
