The Met asked for camp. Ye showed up in a Dickies work jacket

The theme at the Met on 6 May 2019 was “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Kim Kardashian came in custom wet-look Thierry Mugler. Ye stood next to her in a black Dickies Eisenhower jacket, zipped over a white tee, like he’d come straight from a shift.

Hypebeast had the rest: black trousers, a few diamonds and his own Yeezy Season 4 combat boots in Oil. British Vogue said he’d gone in the completely opposite direction to everyone else. Elle’s verdict was that he “looked every bit the USPS mailman.”

It was a jacket anyone could buy. Hypebeast’s and British Vogue’s headlines both led with how little it cost. On the one night a year built for excess, Ye made a workwear price tag the story.

Not his first time off-theme

He’d done it before. At the 2016 gala, “Manus x Machina”, he’d paired a Balmain jacket with shredded jeans, British Vogue pointed out. Elle went further in 2019 and wondered whether a look that far off-theme was actually the most camp thing in the building. It’s a fair question. Camp loves a joke, and turning up to the Met in a Dickies jacket is one.

The boots were his own

Nothing below the knee was borrowed, and it wasn’t Dickies. Season 4 was Ye’s own collection, shown at Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island on 7 Sep 2016. CNN said guests waited hours in the heat for it to start, and the reviews were harsh. Two and a half years later, the combat boot from that show went up the Met steps.

2022: Pete Davidson’s charcoal version

On 12 Sep 2022 Pete Davidson presented at the Emmys in a charcoal Dickies Eisenhower with matching trousers. The Independent reported plenty of viewers pointing out how close it was to Ye’s 2019 look.

Three years on, a Dickies jacket at an awards show still read as Ye’s move.
